Things have been busy, and crazy and wonderful to say the least. The down side is the neglect to this blog. I am hoping to change all that. I will soon announce a spring special, and no it may not be spring just yet, but I am in a spring state of mind so way not let you all reap the benefits!

I cannot believe it is now the first day of February, my how time really does fly. Valentines is just weeks away and I want to celebrate the whole month. I was recently inspired by an amazing photographer Kristen Cook who posted a picture a day for the month of January and I fell in love, not only with her images and B&W style but with the idea of one month of photos of her children.

So this month I will do just that, celebrate the love of my family with an image a day. AND I will attempt it all in B&W, why not mix it up a little right?

In this house, you are never more than 3 feet from a car at any given time in any given room. My boys eat breathe and sleep cars and I love watching them play with them. They often get eye level, whether sitting on the floor beside the coffee table(as in this shot) or laying on their sides while pushing the cars back and forth on the floor. Cars are where it's at, even fancy sprint cars like the one Asa was telling me all about when I captured this image.

This sweet little thing has a schedule of her own. Adorable and headstrong at 7 weeks (but I secretly think those traits started in womb). Born just one day after I left for for Austin, and past her due date, I swear she was holding out on me...haha. So as it was, we had to wait until I returned. It was worth it though. Besides the lack of scrunchy baby poses and the newborn hats being much too small, I did get some cute shots, how could I not, she's so dang cute! However, she was much more interested in eating and socializing than being in front of the camera. You made me work for it little Miss P. and I hope your mommy and daddy love the images!

Ok, ok, I can't help but chuckle at this title and for good reasons. First, it's almost October! Where on earth did the summer go?? Second, the thought of a lazy summer evening and actually having a lazy summer evening are two very different things. Especially for moms with small children like myself and the radiant Miss Devon. However when we sent her dear hubby and her adorable first born a packing so we could do some one on one *just mommy* shots, we did actually have a chance to relax a bit and enjoy the quiet. When you are being pulled, called to, whined at and needed 24/7 us moms will take any chance we can get to be alone.- These moments are few and far between and must be treasured like a flawless rare diamond. In this case our alone time was spent together and in my opinion being kid free, even with a fellow adult, totally counts as alone! Haha.

We found this great outdoor corridor of vacant offices and enjoyed the warm evening air. I love the splash of color from the flowers she brought. I love that there was a natural breeze that made her hair dance from time to time. And I love the beauty that radiates from this mother with child. No, it may not have been a *lazy* summer evening but I enjoyed it as though it was and the images reflect that feel of quiet and calm that we all need sometimes... especially a mom with a newborn on the way.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Personally I am not ready to put away my flip flops just yet but seeing the fall seasonal displays in all the stores gets me bit giddy. It's an inner tug of war. Thankfully I can say that Fall really is my favorite time of year. The colors, the cooler weather, the clothes, the holidays, I love it all! It just came too quickly.

This is also the time when people (some begrudgingly, you know who you are) start planning the holidays and it's also the photographer's peak season. I'm a little late in the game with posting my holiday specials, partially due to the busy summer we had and partially due to the denial that fall is really here. But now truly is the best time to get your family portraits done as they make wonderful gifts for family and friends.

This year I am offering a digital mini only. I felt this would best accommodate those who want to create their own prints and gifts for family and friends. I also thought this would be a great opportunity for those of you thinking outside the box and who may be interested in a fun Halloween shoot. The session possibilities are endless,but it is a mini -so time is limited. ;) Oh, and I'm throwing a very cool custom item into that package too.

San Jose Baby Photographer: For The Love Of Dirt.

I have to admit I don't take a whole lot of *nice* photos of my boys. Most are fun moments taken with my point and shoot. I found my good camera too time consuming for those everyday situations and thus I started not taking any pictures at all- until I was given a new P&S for Christmas(thanks G-pa). But there are times- like birthdays or special moments that I desire the quality that my great little Powershot just can't touch, and the other night hanging with Odin was one of those times.

I had a suspicion of Odie's love for dirt when I would find him covered in soil from a flowerless pot at the side of our yard a couple months back. It wasn't a great play area so I kept him away from it. Here at his grandparents home in Texas there is a vast area to play and run free while I lounge on the porch swing sipping ice water on a humid summer evening. His freedom to explore while still in my view has lead to a few discoveries- from bugs to plants and of course the much loved dirt. More than once he has sat at the side of the driveway grabbing handfuls of dirt and twigs and tossing them with a gleeful squeal into the air. More than once he has come to me with his head covered with said dirt and twigs and more than once have I been shocked at the amount of dirt and twigs that can be found at the bottom of a drained bathtub brought in on such a tiny body.

The other night Odie pulled his prized blue wagon up and down the drive until finding the perfect spot to sit and play. I watched him, his back to me, as he grabbed handfuls of dirt, lifting his arms in the air and dropping all the filthy goodness to the ground. This is one of those moments that is easy to forget but would be much better remembered, so I went in to grab my camera. I laughed as he turned to me, his blond eyebrows black with filth. His tummy caked in a drool and mud mixture. He went about his business as I tried my best to capture him playing without being in range of a handful of tossed sandy fun. The result was some wonderful images that make me smile and I'll treasure for years to come and who knows, maybe I'll get to use them against him as a teenager. ;)

Hi everyone, it's been a crazy busy summer. June and July was spent finishing up all current shoots and completing orders before the boys and I headed down here to Austin TX to spend a month with Grandma and Grandpa. I have so many things to post and share but have had little time to do so.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite families during an evening Bigger Bitty Bug session(try saying that fast 5 times). It's been so much fun seeing the transition from three to four(some of their maternity and newborn shots are on my website) and now seeing how big little Miss S has become, not to mention that her feisty little personality can't help but make you smile!

I love how spirited this family is and I am thrilled to have captured so many playful moments and iteractions.

Even her dirty little toes make me giggle!

But for reals ya'll, I LOVE Canvas! It makes me so happy to see the final product on a large canvas. So lush, so rich and so beautiful. Did I actually say "for reals ya'll" and why was that said in my friend Sara's voice? Huh. As for this gorgeous piece... it's Mmm Mmm good! - and that was the Campbells Soup jingle.

Two newborns in 4 days and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed each session. One might think that a baby is a baby, but I can't express how different every shoot is or how different each baby is. As much as I may try and run through a series of shots that parents hope for or request, ultimately it's our little models who decide what they want to do- or not do. Their personalities really grow on me with every shot, making each newborn session unique and exciting.

Little Miss M was the perfect combination of sugar and spice. She battled with me for arm placement but would then pause just a moment, when I could capture the shot before deciding she wanted to try something else. She made me work for it and I enjoyed every moment!

Sigh. There is nothing like a beautiful sleeping newborn girl to take photos of. Little Miss A was so precious and let me try all kinds of new things today. But I have to send out a HUGE thank you to her mom and dad for being so patient and open to my ideas and willing to try so many different things.

Using the piano however, was all daddy's idea. In fact we tried a few piano shots with her on top but she started to get hungry and we called it a day, but while I packed up all my goodies, she filled her tummy and fell asleep. That's when dad asked if we could give it one more try. Boy am I so happy we did!

Of how I would love to see this on canvas!

There is something so endearing and playful about daddy and baby playing while mommy is looking all fine for the camera. As mothers we sometimes get lost in the day to day and put our own needs aside. Wow, the last month has been CRAZY! Let me start at the beginning...

My mom came to town for a visit. It was a double duty trip- visit + allow me some much needed time to work on those nitty gritty time consuming business tasks that are hard to do with two boys under three running around. Unfortunately my RA had other plans.

The week before she arrived I noticed some numbness in my right pinky finger. Since my life has been a chain of one strange physical occurrence after another, I thought little of it. Even the day I realized I could no longer extend my pinky finger, I only made a casual call to my hand surgeon for an appointment. To make a long story short, I snapped the tendon and despite urgent surgery, they were unable to repair it- I waited too long. Lesson learned. I know many of you must be thinking it strange to not panic if you lost some use of a digit but again, this isn't the first time so yes I was concerned, hence the call to the doctor, but thinking it was urgent didn't even cross my mind.

So my mom extended her stay a few weeks and I rushed to get a few tasks done before the day of my operation, including a very quick mini birthday shoot for Odin's first birthday. Kinda bummed we didn't get to a cake smashing shoot but such is life. Thankfully after years of multiple hand surgeries I have become quite ambidextrous but I was so grateful that my mom was able to extend her stay, change diapers, do dishes, laundry and all that other good stuff I was uninterested, Uh, I mean unable to do. It ended up being a pretty big surgery with multiple tendon repairs, and a wrist plate/bone removal. The great news is that I can now hold my camera again. I mean really that's the most important thing right? Hehe. There are still many things that hurt to do and my hand is still week nor can I fully use my fingers but I'm working on all that.

I have so many blog posts to write, photos to share, cool new packaging, samples and even a great May special announcement in honor of Mothers Day. So stay tuned this week to see what's coming up!

And of course I can't post without adding a few photos. These were taken last week as a test run to see if I could hold my camera- yuppers! That put my mind at ease as I have two newborn shoots coming up in the next few weeks. :)

My handsome boys want nothing to do with my camera - if it was the shape of a race car and had wheels, then maybe...

... and of course my beautiful mom who was such a huge help. Dank Do Gamma!

I am so happy that Spring has arrived. With it comes warmer weather, colorful flowers and new life all around. It also brings with it, long awaited photo shoots like this couple I had the joy of photographing yesterday. This shot jumped out at me as I skimmed through the session this morning. The colors, the emotion, the tenderness.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing this little doll and her mom and dad. She is such a photogenic little girl regardless of the fact that all her giggling stops the moment I point the camera in her direction. She has such an infectious little laugh also. Check out that auburn peach fuzz, and that little flower band is too cute for words! I will post more from this fun shoot soon, but couldn't wait to share these sneaks with everyone.

In other news, today is the the auction I mentioned in my last post. I am excited and a bit nervous. What if nobody bids? LOL. I hope to get the chance to stop by later this afternoon. A girlfriend is taking me out for a pre-birthday, completely kid free evening and we plan to do some shopping and much needed girly stuff that never really happens when you have babies hanging all over you all the time. Not that we don't love our babies, they are amazing, but momma's need a break too.

It all started at the young age of 4. In the years that followed I was told I may end up in a wheelchair, I would never be able to drive a car, adulthood independence would come only by way of assisted living and in my twenties one very rude doctor actually told me, in a not so kind way, that my hands were too crippled to raise a child.

Despite my Arthritis progressing to every joint from head to toe, I never gave up. Some might call it strength, courage or perseverance, but to me it has always been about living the only way I know how and keeping a sense of humor. There have been bumps in the road- like being hospitalized at 10 or the flare up I had shortly after getting married to which my new husband had to help me stand, dress and brush my hair, but to those who saw my future as bleak, I say "Neener, neener!" I was never wheelchair bound, I had my drivers license at 17, my very own apartment at 20 and now an amazing husband and two beautiful sons Asa 2 1/2 and Odin 10mths.

I have always been a creative soul, happiest when wrapped up in some form of creative medium. In 2001 my husband bought me my first film slr camera. I fell in love with this new creative outlet and pursued learning manual mode immediately. Over the next few years my budding photography skills and growing passion for scrapbooking, landed me the opportunity to work in the scrapbook industry. This is where I began to share my story. I never set out to be an inspiration, and the first time I was approached by a stranger and thanked for being so open, I was admittedly, a bit embarrassed. It never occurred to me that my story may inspire others but the knowledge that it could, and did, was somehow comforting. I received many comments as I taught scrapbooking across the country. Many joking about my ability to use my hands in ways that they themselves, being able bodied, could not. Others shared their stories with me. It made me realize the big picture. No matter how tough you may have it, someone has it worse and no matter how down you are you can always get back up. There is always a way to overcome if you look inside yourself for the courage to do so.

With the birth of my oldest son came my renewed passion for photography and the path I had been searching for. I finally knew what I wanted to do with my life. At the age of 14 I started the long journey of corrective surgeries on my hands, feet and jaw, over 20 and counting. To my delight the recent wrist fusions and joint replacements I had enables me to hold a larger camera body, something that wasn't possible in the past. I still have a few issues reaching buttons and knobs but nothing that sways me from doing what I love. This is my first official year in business and it's not easy with two little ones and a chronic illness. In spite of my husband's hints, I am just too excited to slow down! Being able to attend Amy's workshop would be such an incredible opportunity to help me grow as a photographer and inspire through my images. To learn from someone who's knowledge, skill and personal strength I admire, would be an amazing gift. Constant learning brings constant growth... as a mother, wife, friend and photographer.

So anyone up for TPing that rude doctor's house?

Growing up I was very self conscious of my feet and always made sure they were covered. At 30 I purchased my first pair of flip flops EVER and was terrified to wear them in public. This series of pictures was taken by a friend in 2005, a year before my second jaw surgery right wrist fusion and right hand joint replacements. Sharing these images was a huge step for me back then. Now what is really sad, is how I still have these jeans tucked neatly in my drawer like I may someday fit my post baby butt into them again. Sigh.

Valentines Day 2010 with my 3 amazing guys who show me what true happiness is. I recently embraced my point and shoot camera. I had put myself in a place of wanting every photo to be perfect that I actually stopped taking everyday images not wanting the hassle. I was missing out on so many fun memories. Never again!

Finally! After many months of trying to make this shoot happen with a dear friend of mine we decided to give up scheduling and just made a rash judgment call between rain clouds last week. I am so excited to finally have these done as I have been dying to use my tutus and see all these bright fun colors on some little girls. Of course it helps when the camera loves the subject!

I spent less than 30 minutes behind the lens, (gotta love time stamping on images) and am tickled with the results. So tickled that I am sharing more than usual, and even then it was hard to exclude some! Are these not some adorable sisters!?

This first shot is one of my fav's and I scored this fantastic prop chair at a local furniture consignment store. I think it's so yummy!

Is this pink hair bow not the essence of all things girly! Teehee.
(Shhh, I hope Miss J doesn't mind me posting the laughing shot, but I just LOVE how all three of them are laughing and being silly. Too cute!)

If it were any other shot...

Technically speaking this is not an image I would normally keep. Faces are cut off, out of focus and grainy, and yet amongst all the "technically correct" images, this is the one that spoke to me the most. It's funny how that works. This picture was taken during one of grandma's visits. Being that we live so far from all our family, visits are few and far between so we wanted a mini session of the two of them together. This was a fleeting moment that I saw but was not prepared for, I quickly turned my camera towards them and snapped the shudder- hoping that maybe I lucked out and caught that tender moment in the frame. I guess this goes to show that it's not always the quality of the image but the emotion it evokes that makes it special.

I am excited to share my newest addition to my boutique line. This little beauty is called the Impression Case. It's a custom made photo box filled with 7, 12 or 20 images of your choice. Each image is mounted and has a beautiful fine linen texture. This case also comes with an easel to display your 5x7 images. Unfortunately the easel I had for these images is a bit large and I am still on the hunt for the prefect size and style, but this is pretty close!

The photos do not do this justice, it's gorgeous in person. This case comes with my digital collections but it may also be ordered separately.

I would like to say I had to generate a random computer drawing or even that I put all the entries in one large bowl. Sadly though this was not the case. Then again not so sad for the winner as her generosity won her the winning spot. Why so glum? She was the ONLY entrant! Thankfully, I am secure enough in my abilities to not take this as a personal dislike for my photography, well that and the sad fact is, many of the very talented photographers that joined forces for this cause also had few to NO entries. I am hoping this is simply because many people had already donated to this or another worthy charity.

So a friend of mine linked me to a fun site called iheartfaces -thanks Suzy Q! It's a great site that does weekly contests/challenges of sorts for all level of photo enthusiasts, beginners to pro. I thought this would be fun to do here at Little Green Bug and I encourage others to join in the fun(and if you do, please share your blog with me). You don't win anything tangible, it's all for fun and there are some great images and blogs that I have stumbled upon through their links!

This weeks challenge at i heart faces is texture and I decided to go back a couple of years and pull out a favorite of mine. I cannot look at it with out giggling! Asa was about 5 months old and wasn't fully sitting on his own yet. He could balance for maybe 10-15 seconds or so before toppling over. Daddy was his spotter just out of the camera view. Asa must have thought we sounded funny with the ear protection on because he kept giggling when we spoke to him. So why the silly picture in the first place? Well, I was part of an online mommies group and they did a weekly ABC photo. You could take a photo of your baby using that weeks letter for the theme. This week was "Q", thus I had myself an itty bitty Quail Hunter! Haha.

Yesterday I had the joy of meeting little Miss Kaityrose. She is just two weeks old and as cute as a button. She certainly made me work for each shot but hearing her adorable noises and holding such a cutie, made it so very worth it!

To my delight Mom loved this image so much she wanted the "after" to go with the "before." This was my first attempt at such a task and I am thrilled at how it turned out! So here ya go Ms. A, I hope you love it as much as the first!

And what good would a sneak peek be without daddy? I love seeing babies in the hands of there daddies. Mr. J is such a proud dad too, barely took his eyes off his baby girl the entire shoot (and I have the photos to prove it...hehe) and with a sweety like her, I don't blame him at all.

You cannot turn on the news without hearing about the ongoing devastation in Haiti. The stories and images are simply heartbreaking. To help in the efforts of raising money for such a needy cause I have joined up with Helping Hearts. A photographer I admired artistically and professionally Michele Anderson of Pinkle Toes Photography , and her dear friend Lyndsay Stradtner of Life in Motion Photography, decided that together, we need to do something to help. This is were you come in!

You and your sweetheart could win a romantic photo session or a children's photo session from Little Green Bug Photography.

• The romantic session will be held at 4:30pm on Friday, February 5th. And the Children's Valentine Session will be held at 9am on Saturday, February 6th.
• Session is for two adults OR up to 3 children and will last between 1-2 hours.
• Winner will also receive 15 fully processed, high resolution images on CD. Print to your heart’s content!

2010. I can't express how exited I am to start this year. I have so much planned, so many goals and a bucket full of enthusiasm. You see 2010 marks the start of my new career as a photographer. I will soon be announcing my official "Grand Opening" if you will. The past year and a half has been spent planning, learning, portfolio building and all the other wonderful and time consuming things that encompass starting ones own business. Truth be told I am still not fully set, but I'm getting so close I can taste it!

The next few weeks will bring lots of excitement here at LGB as product samples and new client welcoming packets begins to arrive. I'm looking forward to showing off all the goodies that I will be carrying. For now though, I would like to share a glimpse back on the last year and some of my personal favorite images and moments. Thanks to everyone who who helped me through 2009 and here's to a new and exciting year!

I was lucky to have my mom come and visit and really wanted to do a shoot with her and her grandsons. Despite a very temperamental 2 year old who doesn't enjoy having his picture taken, I was able to get some great shots and even created an album to give her for Christmas. In fact I loved the album so much I just ordered one for myself, and I promise to post pictures when it gets here!

As for what pictures to share on this blog- UGH. It was so hard to choose! Here are just a few of my personal favs.

These next two are my favorites of the boys. Despite the fact that they aren't looking at the camera, these are great depictions of their personalities. Odin is a very happy, giggly boy and Asa is quiet and independent. I love this gaze he does even though it frustrates me to no end. He refuses to look at you as though there is something much more important in another direction - just like he was doing in this picture. There was nothing behind me, he just didn't want to look at me. I like to think that when taking his picture it's his male model serious gaze, however when he's being scolded it's nothing more than an "I'm as stubborn as my daddy" stare. Ha! ♥

Sunday I had the pleasure of working with one of the most entertaining couples of my short(but growing) career as a custom photographer. These ladies were constantly cracking jokes and I don't think that we went more than 2 minutes without all of us laughing about something! Miss K is so excited about being pregnant that she actually fears her belly isn't big enough and that she doesn't look pregnant. *Giggle* Santa couldn't even give her a run for his money on the full roundness she is sportin'!

Family As Art

Up until a week ago one might not believe a photographer lived in my house. I had virtually no family photos on the walls and very few in frames. Like many people most of my images were in albums, boxes or on my hard drive, with the exception of a handful of framed snapshots here and there.

A few things changed over the past couple months that not only inspired me to make a change but encouraged it. The biggest was the desire to make my family portraits art, and move away from the stuffy multi-image collage picture frames that so many people have. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."-said in my best Seinfeld voice. I want clients to purchase images with a purpose, not just because they like them. Let's face it, why spend money on photos that are just going to be tucked away somewhere? Alas, I too was guilty of this.

On my quest I found some wonderful display ideas including a gorgeous canvas display that I completely fell in love with. Not only was my heart set on creating a similar display for myself, but to offer these fantastic display ideas to all my clients. Staring in January each client will receive a display guide when they book a session. This guide can help you begin planning how you would like to create and display your own family artwork even before your actual session date!

As for my new canvas wall, well I cannot look at it without smiling! It truly makes my heart sing. The scrapbooker in me saw a blank wall not unlike a scrapbook page and with some photos and journaling, felt the need for "embellishments" also. My husband may have rolled his eyes at that fact there there are butterflies on our living room wall but I think it's perfect. Besides in a house full of boys, momma needs some girly touches!

Even looking at these photos makes me giddy!

Wondering what to wear for a family shoot? Fall is a fantastic time for family photos. There are so many wonderful textures and layers that can be incorporated into your shoot.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

Regardless of the time of year to dress in layers, light jackets, scarves, hats, etc...
When it comes to families, coordination, not matching is the key. Choose a favorite outfit- this may be moms, dad's or a child's and then pull colors from there.
Keep patterns to a minimum. If mom is in a cool and funky pattern dress, then other family members should be in solids or minimal prints. You don't want competing patterns that become distracting in your images.
Try to avoid logos. Junior's favorite Disney Cars shirt may be cute, but it can be distracting and dated in family images.

This little bean sure gave me a run for my money! She was not going to just lay still and quiet and let me do my thing. Nope, she fussed and cried the whole time. Last weekend I had my first "Big Kid" shoot. Up until now all the children I have photographed have been under three. I thought "Great I'll finally be able to give direction. This will be a breeze." Ha! Boy was I wrong. I forgot to factor in the free spirit of a six year old boy. Direction smection, he was doing his own thing! Welcome to my new blog. It's been slow going to get this up and running and here is the reason why...

Master Odin Zain Burleson was born April 13th. It's been a few months and time is flying by so fast! From new life to new blogs and new careers, so many beginnings and so much excitement! Even though I am still in the works of becoming an actual business, I am receiving steady client inquiries. This only makes me want to get more done and speed up the process to becoming "official". Unfortunately there isn't much I can speed up with a 24 and 4 month old in the house!

I will soon start posting sneak peeks and some favorite images from upcoming and past sessions. I am excited to get this blog up and running. Stay tuned, there is much more on the way!
